for the life of me
It’s official — I’ve gone from art world outsider to elitist! This little gem just popped up in my Inbox:

subject for the life of me …
i went to the Whitney biannual, and have to say the state of “art” is in a shambles.
left over construction material, dumped on the floor! why? how? who?
there isn’t enough room open in this e-mail to let me share with you how awful I feel,
and how the work you are posing as art in your photography exhibit offends me.
suffice to say, people like you and your high brow arbiters of trend are the problem
please don’t promote photography, as you have no eye for it

Dear Jen,
Hope you’re not sweating this. From the timestamp on the nastygram, it looks like it was composed in the hours immediately after many of us learned that you and your panelists hadn’t picked us as winners of the latest HHS! competition. Maybe that’s just a coincidence and the e-mailer WASN’T in the throes of what I hope is a normal, pointless, fleeting phase of any defeat: toying with the idea that the people who picked the actual winners might themselves be catastrophically flawed.
Whatever your real or imagined flaws as an arbiter of artistic taste, personism.com is great. Keep it up.

Sara and I walked through the Biennial, but somehow we missed the “Biannual.” Hm. We must be philistines.
hilarious. it must mean you’re doing something right.
Strange and wayward hate email definitely means you are doing something right.
You should print it out and frame it!
Wow, I didn’t know that Aldous Huxley was still writing. Print out 200 of them, sign them, and charge $20 each! I’ll buy one!
