I probably get to see one in ten of the exhibitions that I am planning to see. Here I am in NYC, where there is constantly great stuff happening and yet: so freaking busy! One show that’s on my list now and I’m really hoping not to miss is Regarding Intimacy, curated by Saul Robbins. It’s on view up at my alma mater, Hunter College, til Saturday and I’ve heard from a bunch of people that it’s a great exhibition. Here’s a snippet from the show’s statement:

In recent years, increasingly risqué depictions of physical and sexual intimacy have pervaded visual media. However, many other photographic portrayals of intimacy exist, as contemporary photographers continue to explore the influential relationships in their day-to-day lives. The artists in this exhibition reveal a dynamic and multifaceted reading of interpersonal intimacy, proposing that it is our own experience of intimate relationships, rather than that depicted in the media, which is the most enduring and satisfying. It is this broader range of normal and everyday intimate relationships that deserves our attention, holding a much greater promise of attainability, rather than the highly stylized, glamorous, and erotic one that is so often in vogue and out of reach.

If you’re similarly pressed for time, or not even in NYC, Andy Adams over at Flak Photo has been collaborating with Saul and running photos in support of the exhibition all week.

While you’re at it, bookmark Flak or add it to your feedreader - they run new photos daily in addition to photo essays on the weekend. It’s a nicely curated selection, and for me it’s a lovely respite from the deluge of images I get from all my Flickr pals. (Who I love, yes I do, but my contacts list has gotten out of control.)

Flak’s Weekend Series this month is Amy Stein’s Domesticated. They’ll publish a new photo from the series each Saturday in May.
