Gursky, Even Bigger

Bahrain I by Andreas Gursky, c-print mounted on plexi in artist’s frame, 128.5 in x 87.25 in.
I just received the press release for Andreas Gursky’s upcoming exhibition at Matthew Marks. It’s opening on Thursday May 3rd, which sounds far off when I type it but really is just around the corner. A snippet from the release regarding the photo above:
Digg This Save to Del.icio.usSeveral of the most surprising new works stem from the world of Formula One racing, including the largest photographs in the artist’s oeuvre to date… [One] work depicts the rolling, visually perplexing route of the Bahrain racetrack, the dark swaths of blacktop snaking their way through the desert.

If you can’t make ‘em good, make ‘em big.

I just love Gursky, I know that’s shocking for some people.

These are all on show in London at the moment - spread over two galleries (White Cube and Monika Spruth, Gursky’s principal gallerist.)
There are several pictures of F1 pit crews, which are a real departure from anything that has gone before, and even bigger (6 metres in length). I must admit to not being so sure about them - they seemed like something you might have seen in a high-end F1 calender, not the Gursky I have always loved.
The picture that you post though - of the Bahrain F1 track was absolutely hypnotic. It actually doesn’t show the true track - the bottom third of the picture is added in to make the track make no sense at all. It really is an incredible work - seeing it from about 20 yards away, through the window of the gallery I thought it was a painting and even asked at the desk where the Gursky’s were being shown. Next to it was a similarly invented picture of the Tour de France. Similarly hypnotic. I think I looked at them both for about 45 minutes before leaving as I thought they might start to get worried…… Looking for the join was great fun. Enjoy the exhibition when it gets to you !
