Gender Diversity (Or Lack Thereof) By the Numbers
Jason Kottke just put up a very interesting post, Gender Diversity at Web Conferences. Numbers do not lie, my friends: The best in show was the upcoming sxsw interactive conference in Austin @ 28%.
I can only assume that the Carson Systems people truly don’t give a shit. They were called to the mat about their Future of Web Apps conference conference in SF back in September - that roster had no women at all. In fact, that was the first time I started making noise about this kind of thing. Their London edition of the conference, which ends today? 26 men, 1 woman.
Thanks to Jason for running these numbers, and for linking to my List of Women Speakers for Your Conference, which as he notes, is skewed heavily towards the creative fields. We could use input to strengthen the presence of web/tech women on the list, so please post additions in comments on that topic if you have them.
Also, I remain interested in putting together a conference that’s web/design/media related, but haven’t had the time or resources to get the ball rolling. If you’re interested in working on it with me, by all means get in touch: person AT personism DOT com. Keep in mind, I’m not interested in putting together something that’s all women - separate but equal is not my thing.

Thanks for the names, Heidi - for the sake of organization I am going to port them over to the original list topic. Also, for future posters - please scan the the list for names before adding them in comments and in all possible cases include a relevant URL. Less to research means we can update the list more quickly.
