Girlbomb’s Covenant House Benefit

I have known Janice Erlbaum since high school - we used to smoke in the girl’s bathroom together at Stuyvesant and then later we attended Hunter at the same time. We have a long history of drifting and reconnecting for a lot of years now, but always being able to pick up where we left off - I’ve seen her perform poetry at the Nuyorican, she interviewed me for her radio show @ Pseudo, and most recently I quite literally danced at her wedding.

Janice recently published her first book, a memoir called Girlbomb: A Halfway Homeless Memoir which recounts her life during one of those left off times between us - she left Stuy and left home and lived shelters and group homes and had a lot of rough years. Covenant House is a place and an organization that Janice credits with saving her life, and to give back she’s hosting a literary benefit to raise money for them May 9th. It’s being held at the Bowery Poetry Club. Says Janice:

When I was a fifteen-year-old runaway, Covenant House saved my life. Because Covenant House was there for me, I never had to spend a single night on the streets. Twenty years later, I’m coming together with this amazing group of authors - all of whom have had their own ‘halfway homeless’ experiences of living on the margins - to help make sure that this generation of kids has access to the same lifesaving services I got.
