Mon dieu! Check out this fabulous set of Vintage French Tourism PR photos by Flickr user Dov. Says he:

From 1934 towards the end of the sixties, the French Ministry for Tourism employed full-time PR photographers to snap "celebrities" travelling by Air France. I've found a pack of these press photos at the flea market of Clignancourt, and bought them for 1 euro each.

A Measured Response

It's way too expensive for everyday use, but this could be just the thing to help me address my utter incompentence when it comes to the precision aspect of hanging shows. (Fortunately, I have plenty of awesome people to help out with that installation stuff.)

Girlbomb ' s Covenant House Benefit

I have known Janice Erlbaum since high school - we used to smoke in the girl's bathroom together at Stuyvesant and then later we attended Hunter at the same time. We have a long history of drifting and reconnecting for a lot of years now, but always being able to pick up where we left off - I've seen her perform poetry at the Nuyorican, she interviewed me for her radio show @ Pseudo, and most recently I quite literally danced at her wedding.

Janice recently published her first book, a memoir called Girlbomb: A Halfway Homeless Memoir which recounts her life during one of those left off times between us - she left Stuy and left home and lived shelters and group homes and had a lot of rough years. Covenant House is a place and an organization that Janice credits with saving her life, and to give back she's hosting a literary benefit to raise money for them May 9th. It's being held at the Bowery Poetry Club. Says Janice:

When I was a fifteen-year-old runaway, Covenant House saved my life. Because Covenant House was there for me, I never had to spend a single night on the streets. Twenty years later, I'm coming together with this amazing group of authors - all of whom have had their own ‘halfway homeless’ experiences of living on the margins - to help make sure that this generation of kids has access to the same lifesaving services I got. Please join us on Tuesday, May 9, and add your support.

jen bekman is featured in the May issue of Art in America. Journalist Stephen Maine's Report from New York: Down East is a round-up of Manhattan's Lower East Side galleries. He describes it as a "mecca for independent, highly innovative new galleries."

Here's a snippet from what he has to say about jen bekman:

"Hey, Hot Shot" is the name of the quarterly four day long exhibition of 10 emerging photographers that Jen Bekman mounts in her diminutive storefront gallery on Spring Street just west of the Bowery. The shows allow Bekman a highly structured way to make contact with new artists, a favorite aspect of her work. The currently popular "poetic snapshot" esthetic is well represented among the photographers she works with including Tema Stauffer, Dana Miller and Eliot Shepard.

Bekman... opened the gallery in March of 2003 with an emphasis on photography and an eye on the future New Museum location. Eschewing intellectual obscurities, she takes an unencumbered, "populist" approach to marketing her artists.
